"I was photographed for the Nothing But Light project on Halloween day. Eight years earlier to the day, I took off a costume and couldn’t return to the role I had previously been playing in life. That role had been created out of capitulation and loyalty to my family, and there was nothing of me in it. It was no great loss. I had never been true to myself.

I was eventually able to uncover the truth. I let go of the role-playing and began to live in a way that makes sense to me, even as it makes me less comprehensible to others. It was a struggle to become myself, to take ownership of my own person. At my advanced age, I am only just learning how to consent without deferring to other people’s expectations. It was a pleasure to consent to be shot for this series, to permit myself to be seen in this most intimate and elemental way. This is what I want".
